Sketch Diary: Mo gestures, mo betta

Just some gesture practice. I'll keep saying it - you wanna get better at drawing ANYTHING? Practice gestures. It's like jumping in the fast lane. In 10 minutes, you can get what feels like 10 hours of muscle memory and eye to hand connection practice: quickposes.com and no, they don't pay me to plug them.

Sketch Diary: 60 seconds of gesture chaos

Just a sketch dump full of gestures. I think my fave poses are in the bottom left. Quickposes.com - go check it out. Do some gesture exercise pages! It's fast, fun, and you'll feel super productive. If you're just starting out, I recommend focusing on drawing as fast as possible so maybe even just do 30 seconds or less per image. Just get those basic shapes down. You can always go back and pick out a favorite at the end and develop it further into another more formal drawing.

Sketch Diary: Gestures for days

Another quick gesture study using Quickpose.com. I was still really stiff here. Some of the more recent practices, I've had better luck with using those smooth S, C and straight lines to get more of the feeling of the pose, rather than moving into contouring too quickly. Each practice has been an education in some way.

Sketch Diary: How many gestures can fit on a page??

Gestures are so wild, to me. I like to set a timer (started using Quickpose and it's THE BEST) for 60 seconds or so and just see what happens. It helps loosen up the hand, helps you see things for what they are as a whole and not get lost in the details, and sometimes helps you feel super accomplished cuz hey! you just drew 10 things! That's 10 things that helped you learn. 10 things that moved you forward. And usually, I find I get at least one jem out of it that I then use in a more finished drawing later.

Sometimes you just gotta draw weird ears. I was playing with the pose and I'm sad to say it didn't survive my goofs. But still a fun drawing.

Welp, that didn't go as planned. I think I erased and retried that hand about 20 times. That's what I get for trying to squeeze out a sketch right before bed. Sleepy sketches have a 50/50 chance of being junk.  But look I did a quick background! At least he's not floating in oblivion.

I didn't notice until just now how sweet that leg is... the rest of the sketch is pretty blah but that bend on the front of the leg is really doing it for me right now. It's the little things.

Sketch Diary: Girl sitting on air

Just a girl... in a slightly awkward pose hah. Not sure what I was going for here. Feel like she should have wings but I just wasn't feeling it at the time. Wanted to play with hand positions and spinal curve. That head is definitely too big though, an error common with my sketches lately. But I'll waste no more time on it! Off to the next victim of head enlargement.
