Sketch Diary: Mo gestures, mo betta

Just some gesture practice. I'll keep saying it - you wanna get better at drawing ANYTHING? Practice gestures. It's like jumping in the fast lane. In 10 minutes, you can get what feels like 10 hours of muscle memory and eye to hand connection practice: quickposes.com and no, they don't pay me to plug them.

Sketch Diary: 60 seconds of gesture chaos

Just a sketch dump full of gestures. I think my fave poses are in the bottom left. Quickposes.com - go check it out. Do some gesture exercise pages! It's fast, fun, and you'll feel super productive. If you're just starting out, I recommend focusing on drawing as fast as possible so maybe even just do 30 seconds or less per image. Just get those basic shapes down. You can always go back and pick out a favorite at the end and develop it further into another more formal drawing.

Sketch Diary: Mo' gestures, mo' problems

Too tight! I was struggling to stay loose with this sketch session. Just couldn't get those curves to work. It happens. That's the point a sketch book, my peeps. Muck it up. Join me... Quickposes.

Sketch Diary: Yoga standing leg stretch

I used Quickposes.com to give me a random reference image to use and I feel like I got really lucky with this one. I mean look at it, profile, no weird angles/perspectives. Super lucky hah. Anyway, I like how the sketch turned out. The shoes don't look quite... real? I clearly don't spent alot of time drawing shoes.

Sketch Diary: Another gesture dump (plus video)

Gotta keep practicing those S, C, I lines. I'm still a bit stiff in these gestures. I like the pose on the left, middle. It looks fairly natural. 10 gestures down, a million to go hahah. Your turn now - Quickposes.com.

Watch me throw down these sweet sweet lines -

Sketch Diary: Speed faces in 60 seconds or less

10 faces, 60 seconds, GO. Again, I used Quickpose for this practice page. Highly recommended. Not just that website, but also the entire practice of fast gesture drawing. Do iiiiiit.

Sketch Diary: How many gestures can fit on a page??

Gestures are so wild, to me. I like to set a timer (started using Quickpose and it's THE BEST) for 60 seconds or so and just see what happens. It helps loosen up the hand, helps you see things for what they are as a whole and not get lost in the details, and sometimes helps you feel super accomplished cuz hey! you just drew 10 things! That's 10 things that helped you learn. 10 things that moved you forward. And usually, I find I get at least one jem out of it that I then use in a more finished drawing later.

Sketch Diary: Gesture with staff warmup

This was supposed to be a warm up page of gesture drawings but I started fiddling with it too much. Wasn't a solid gesture to begin with so I'm not surprised it came out weird. Looks like something I drew 10 years ago lol.

Sketch Diary: Gesture practice dancer jumping

Another quick gesture sketch but this time... in motion! Conveying movement in a drawing can be a difficult skill to learn. I really struggle with it sometimes.

Sketch Diary: Gesture warm-up bathing suit lady

I'm gonna take a WILD guess that I was shopping around for a swim suit and coverup kimono when I drew this. Just a WILD guess. Also, you don't have to finish all your drawings people. It's ok just let it go. This thing was going no where fast. Whatever.
